Bangladesh Marine Academy

Commandant

Dr. Sajid Hussain is serving as the Commandant of Bangladesh Marine Academy (BMA) since 2009.

He was a Minor Freedom Fighter at Madhupur Freedom Fighters' Camp (near the border between Naogaon of Bangladesh & West Dinajpur of India) under Sector-7 during Bangladesh liberation war in 1971.

Earlier, he had served Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) during 1980-1993 from Cadet Engineer to Chief Engineer of various ocean-going ships and then served BMA during 1993-2009 as its Sr. Engineer Instructor, then Chief Engineer and then Deputy Commandant.

He is a IMO (UN) Goodwill Maritime Ambassador (IMOGMA), a Trustee of IMarEST London HQ, a Marine Professional (Chartered Engineer [UK EC], a Chartered Marine Engineer [IMarEST London]), a Governor at WMU (Sweden) Board of Governors, a Council Member at IMarEST London and Maritime Expert of IMO & GlobalMET (Australia).

He has demonstrated skills in Seafaring (1980-93) and Maritime Education Management (1993-current); strong regimental educational backgrounds from Rajshahi Cadet College and Bangladesh Marine Academy with leadership positions; a reputed Professional with a CoC Class ONE Marine Engineer from MCA-UK, MSc in Maritime Safety (Marine Engineering) from World Maritime University, Sweden (1998) and a DSc in Maritime Education (Honoris Causa).

Author of 23 books, 34 Research papers and over 250 features; achieved IMarEST London President’s Commendation 2012, IMarEST Award for his paper ‘Vision of e-Learning & its application into MET’ in 2007, IMarEST London Award for 'Outstanding Contribution in Marine Education 2019' and IMarEST Recognised Speaker' status in 2020.

He has enhanced BMA from ‘Traditional to Digital’ with e-Learning, IT Labs and multimedia projectors; upgraded the 2-Years’ BSc PASS Degree of 1993 into 3-Years’ Bachelor of Maritime Science (BMS) PASS Degree in 2003 and finally into 4-Years’ BMS Honours Degree in 2013. MSc in Maritime Science course has been introduced in 2018.

He led establishing Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University (BSMRMU, Bangladesh) in 2013 as per his thesis 'A proposal for establishment of a Maritime University in Bangladesh' and 4 New Marine Academies (2010-19); commenced in 2020.

He has enriched BMA with various international statuses like Link with AMC Australia (2010), DMU China, VMU Vietnam and SMA Singapore (2011), recognition of EU EMSA in (2011), MOU with WMU Sweden (2014), recognition of MPA Singapore (2015), ISO 9001:2015 from DNV-GL (2016), South Asian Business Award (2017), Partnering Status with World Maritime University, Sweden (2019), recognition of UK MNTB - Merchant Navy Training Board (2019) and recognition of IMarEST London & NI London (2019).

FAMILY

Sajid Hussain is a father of 1 son & 2 daughters. The son is an Architect; elder daughter is studying MSc in Information & Communication Systems at TUHH Germany and the younger one is studying MBA at Chittagong University. His wife Mrs. Meher Nigar is a former teacher. His father was Late Al-Haj Adv. Amzad Hussain [Ex-MP (1973 Parliament) & a Freedom Fighter of Sector-7] and Mother was Late Al-Haj Prof. Janntul Ferdous [Ex-MP (1996 Parliament) & a Freedom Fighter of Sector-7].
