Jeremy Bruer

Jeremy Bruer

Born in Adelaide, Jeremy Bruer has been Australian High Commissioner to the

People’s Republic of Bangladesh since 16 January 2020.

He is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

(DFAT). In Australia, he worked in Pacific Islands Branch as executive officer

responsible for Fiji issues from 1996 until 1998, and from 2003 until 2004 he worked

in International Organisations Branch on UN Security Council issues. He was a

director of the task force that produced the department’s white paper on terrorism in

2004 and, from 2004 until 2005, he was a director in the Iraq Task Force. In

November 2009, he was appointed Assistant Secretary, responsible for relations with

Papua New Guinea and Fiji, a position he held until August 2012. In May 2017 he

was appointed Assistant Secretary Indonesia Program Delivery and Timor-Leste

Branch. In March 2018 he was appointed Assistant Secretary of the department’s

Southeast Asia Maritime Branch, overseeing bilateral relations with Malaysia,

Singapore, Brunei, the Philippines and Timor-Leste. He served in that role until

November 2019. He has also worked in the department’s Melbourne office.

Overseas, he served as third secretary and then second secretary in Port Moresby from

1992 until 1995. He undertook short-term missions in Honiara, where he was deputy

high commissioner during 1995, and Nauru, where he acted as high commissioner

during 1996. He was deputy head of mission at the Australian Embassy in Riyadh

from 1999 to 2002. He was Australia’s ambassador to the United Arab Emirates from

2005 until 2009. He was appointed Australia’s high commissioner to Vanuatu in

November 2012 and served in that role until January 2017.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Adelaide and a Master

of Arts in public policy and government from the University of Melbourne. He is

married with four children.
