Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment
Imran Ahmad MP, Minister of the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, was born on 22 February 1948 in Ambala, India. He is serving as a 6th term Member of Parliament (MP) from Sylhet-4 (Jaintapur, Gowainghat, Companiganj) constituency.
Mr. Imran Ahmad passed the Secondary School Certificate in 1964 and the Higher Secondary Certificate Examination in 1966 from Faujdarhat Cadet College. He graduated with Honours in Geography from the University of Dhaka in 1969 and then in early 1970, joined James Finlay, a British plantation company. In 1974, he decided to become self-employed and has since been running his own tea garden named 'Sreepore Tea Estate'.
Mr. Imran Ahmad started his political career as an activist of Bangladesh Awami League to serve people in 1986. He was elected as an MP from Sylhet-4 constituency in the 3rd (1986), 5th (1991), 7th (1996), 9th (2008), 10th (2014) and 11th parliamentary elections (2018) as a nominee of Awami League. He was a member of the Standing Committee on the 'Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources in the 5th parliament. He was the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Public Undertakings in the 7th parliament. He served as a Member of the Parliament Library Committee and Standing Committee on the 'Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the 9th Parliament. In the 10th national Parliament, he served as the Chairman of the Standing Committee on ‘The Postal, Telecommunication and Information Technology’ Ministry and a member of the Standing Committee on `The Ministry of Science and Technology'. During that time he played a vital role in launching `Bangabandhu Satalite-1' successfully. With his active initiative Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Hi-Tech Park, Sylhet has been established.
Imran Ahmad has been involved in various social and cultural activities. He is the founder of Rangpani Captain Rashid High School and College, Imran Ahmad Women's Govt. Degree College, Goainghat Imran Ahmad Girls' School and Imran Ahmad Technical College, Companiganj. He has involvement in various social and educational institutions including Goainghat Govt. Degree College, Jaintapur Degree College, Sarighat High School, Salutikor College, Aliragaon College, Haji Sohrab Ali School and College, Rustampur College, and Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) Degree College.
He is proficient in Bangla, English, and Urdu. He has visited South Korea, Qatar, UAE, Brunei, and Japan with the Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Apart from this, he has officially visited India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the United States, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, China, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Trinidad, the United Kingdom, Azerbaijan, Uganda, South Africa, Zambia, Cameroon, Switzerland, Colombia, Holland, and Malaysia. Besides, he has personally visited Bhutan, the UK, France, Canada, and Dubai. Besides social service, he had an interest in traveling.
He is married to Prof. Nasreen Ahmad, PhD Pro-Vice Chancellor, University of Dhaka. He has a son and a daughter.
